A fifth human case of Eastern equine encephalitis has been confirmed in New Hampshire.The Department of Health and Human Services reported that an adult in Danville tested positive for the virus in early August and later died.

New Hampshire resident has now died of Eastern equine encephalitis, health officials confirmed Friday. The state Department of Health and Human Services said in an email that it has identified another New Hampshire resident who tested positive for EEE this year.

The Danville, N.H adult was one of five state residents infected by the rare virus in August, according to a statement from the state’s Department of Health and Human Services. In late August, agency officials reported that a Hampstead resident had died from EEE, the state’s first fatal human case of the virus in a decade.

EEE, or the eastern equine encephalitis, has been reported in multiple Northeastern states. The disease has a death rate of about 30%.

Surveillance data and past disease patterns prompted the state to lower the risk, but the public should still take precautions against mosquitoes until the first hard frost, officials said Wednesday.
