A fifth human case of Eastern equine encephalitis has been confirmed in New Hampshire. The Department of Health and Human Services reported that an adult in Danville tested positive for the virus in early August and later died.

New Hampshire health officials on Friday announced that a second resident has died from Eastern Equine Encephalitis, the mosquito-borne virus more commonly known as EEE.The state's Department of Health and Human Services only identified the victim as an adult from Danville who had been in the hospital.

The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services said Friday that a 5th person has tested positive for EEE this year. The individual, an adult from Danville, was hospitalized and later passed away.

The Danville, N.H adult was one of five state residents infected by the rare virus in August, according to a statement from the state’s Department of Health and Human Services. In late August, agency officials reported that a Hampstead resident had died from EEE, the state’s first fatal human case of the virus in a decade.

New Hampshire health officials are now confirming that a Kensington man recently tested positive for Eastern equine encephalitis.

EEE, or the eastern equine encephalitis, has been reported in multiple Northeastern states. The disease has a death rate of about 30%.
