Vancouver grain terminal workers will return to work as soon as Saturday morning, ending a walkout at Canada’s busiest port at the height of harvest season.

Workers at the six main grain terminals located in the Canadian port of Vancouver went on strike on Tuesday, a move that could disrupt exports of canola and other crops, government and industry officials said.

Grain workers at Canada’s biggest port went on strike Tuesday over a dispute regarding hours and pay, setting up what an industry association called a “devastating” situation for farmers during the harvest season.

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA — Grain workers at the Port of Vancouver, British Columbia, could be walking off the job and to picket lines as early as Sept. 24 after the Grain Workers Union (GWU) Local 333 ILWU said it issued a 72-hour strike notice on Sept. 21.

The work stoppage affected six terminals at Port of Vancouver that are critical for exports of canola, wheat, barley and other grains from Canada’s prairies.

A tentative agreement has been reached in the 4-day strike that threatened to disrupt grain shipments across the country.
