The UK government said on Tuesday it has confirmed a strain of the H5N5 bird flu virus in commercial poultry at a premises near Hornsea in Yorkshire.

Cases of bird flu have been confirmed in a commercial poultry farm in Yorkshire. All poultry on the premises near Hornsea in the East Riding will be humanely killed, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) said. A protection zone of 3km (1.86 miles) has been put in place around the site, which has not been identified.

Turkey has reported an outbreak of the highly contagious H5N1 strain of avian influenza on a poultry farm for the first time in over a year, the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) said on Monday.

The UK government said on Tuesday that cases of bird flu had been confirmed in commercial poultry at premises in Yorkshire, hours after it increased the risk level of the disease from medium to high.

The United States Department of Agriculture last week reported that a pig on a backyard farm in Oregon was infected with bird flu.

Bird flu has been spreading fast among poultry in the European Union this season, raising concerns of a repeat of previous crises that led to the deaths of tens of millions of poultry in the bloc and fears that it could spread to humans.
