Do we know for certain that a WNBA franchise would succeed in Philadelphia? The 76ers and Mayor Cherelle L. Parker said Thursday that they not only want a WNBA team here but have discussed the possibility with the league’s decision-makers.

Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker believes the Sixers' new arena deal could help the city land an expansion WNBA team one day.

The league is expanding from the current 12 teams and will have at least 15 teams by 2026. The Golden State Valkyries are set to join the league next season, while Toronto and Portland will debut their teams the following year. WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert said she is "pretty confident" the league can grow to 16 teams by 2028.
