A Bench headed by Justice BR Gavai said that the new SIT should comprise two Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officers, two officers from Andhra Pradesh Police and a senior official of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

The Supreme Court ordered an independent investigation into allegations that animal fat was used in the preparation of laddus served as prasadam at the Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Tirumala, Andhra Pradesh.

The new probe team will consist of members of the CBI, state police, and FSSAI. The Supreme Court said the allegations had the potential of hurting sentiments of people worldwide.

The team can have two members from CBI, two from the state government and one from FSSAI. FSSAI is the most expert apex body in matters of testing food, says SC.
